Lower back pain plays a prominent role in workplace disability both in the US and across the globe. In fact, when a person is suffering from back pain, there may not be a comfortable position—sitting or standing. What can lead to this type of pain?

Causes of Lower Back Pain

Some of the causes of lower back pain include:

  • Spinal Arthritis
  • Muscle or ligament strains
  • Disc degeneration
  • Scoliosis
  • Trauma

When it comes to finding long-term relief from back pain, it is vital to get to the root of the problem. Where the pain often springs from may surprise you.

The Connection Between Lower Back Pain and the Neck

The upper cervical spine is designed to protect a vital part of the body. These bones are found at the base of the skull and enclose the area where the brainstem meets the spinal cord. If the C1 or C2 vertebra is misaligned, it can result in pressure being placed on the brainstem or spinal cord. This can have a powerful effect on the rest of the spine.

In an attempt to correct the misalignment, other bones, muscles, and soft tissue shift. This can create tension throughout the back. In fact, sometimes the greatest compensation takes place in the lower back. That is why checking leg length is usually a good indicator of atlas (C1) alignment. Even a small neck misalignment will cause one shoulder to drop, one hip to be higher, and one leg to be shorter.

Correcting the underlying problem, the upper cervical misalignment, can help the rest of the body to shift back into place in a natural way. Rather than popping and cracking the spine in various locations (as in general chiropractic), upper cervical chiropractic only involves gentle adjustments of the top couple of bones, and the rest of the back aligns in time.
